Peter, Are you looking at purchasing each direction separately or at round trip packages? Round trips from London to San Jose seem to be about $1200 USD for September 28 to October 6 (via the Orbitz website) (assuming you would like an extra day to adjust for jet-lag). If you fly into San Francisco instead of San Jose it's about $100 USD cheaper, but you get stuck in a shuttle bus for a couple extra hours (and it's on the "wrong" side of the road).
Go look at Virgin-Atlantic economy. Cramped, but those dates are about $800 USD round trip. Not that we're recommending a specific airline. Just come on over and learn something new! There is always plenty of entertaining stuff to enjoy and explore in The Bay Area...
