Haven't tried it on a server group yet, but I don't see why you would need to do any of that either. It doesn't alter the database structure so the other servers in the server group should still be able to connect when one has been patched.
But I don't see why you would leave some servers unpatched. I would do them all one after the other.. The only thing I would do (although I do not see the need to) is stop the service on the other servers too and declare a maintenance outage.. Without which it is only possible to give you very generalized information. One advise that will work irrespective of what your architecture and environment is, is that you got to give it a whole lot of more memory and processing power than your previous version.
