We just tell our users to click CTRL+K in (IE is our standard browser) to
open a new tab that opens the login page if their session is expired, login
and close the new tab.

In that discussion there were a few customizations discussed but from the
looks of your post on the Communities you also dove pretty deep into
customizing the jsp pages.  Maybe there is a tidbit that will help?

Ultimately I think the only real (reliable) solution is for BMC to enhance
how this feature works.  I thought this had been submitted as an Idea in
the BMC Communities but I must have been thinking about the discussion I
mentioned above.  Looks like it is time for that Idea to be submitted.
