I might be one of the few people that trust the BMC insiders that say it is
ok to use a higher version of Dev Studio with an earlier version of AR
Server (a tip I got from Evening with Engineering at WWRUG10, maybe
WWRUG09). Sure there is the bug that doing this helped Dave Shellman find
earlier in the year with attachment pools and panels. That is the first
time I have heard of any issue.

I have been using higher versions of Dev Studio with lower version of AR
Server for a few years. Admittedly I didn't start this right away after
being advised it was ok. I started after being frustrated with the bugs in
earlier versions (7.5) of Dev Studio and lacking features.

We use DS 8.1 regularly with our "older" AR 7.6.04 environment (I know some
people are still running 4.x). 8.1 is all my team has installed just for
the reasons Carl mentions; using a lower version of Dev Studio than AR
Server is BAD! Since we work on 7.6.04, 8.0 and 8.1 AR Servers it is too
easy to have the wrong version of Dev Studio (7.6.04) open on an 8.0 or 8.1
server.

@Lisa - Yes you will be able to convert to/from base/custom if you upgrade
Dev Studio. I recommend it but it is against the normal "only use same
version tools" practice.

@Carl - Dev Studio has the logic to not show options that the AR Server
cannot handle such as granular overlays. Is there room for something to go
wrong here? Sure but there is also room for something to go wrong when I
drive down the street. There is a higher risk of me dying in my car than
there is of using DS 8.1 with 7.6.04 server :)
