I use that all the time. You can use that to manipulate the properties of fields that are not in view or not in any of the views using that without bringing them in view.
If you have the time attend the presentation that Jason Miller, Rod Harris and myself have tried to put together that will be on Tuesday where we will attempt to demonstrate little tips like that that can make your life a whole lot easier with the Dev Studio.. Typically these fields are not in any views so they would not be seen. If you want to see them you could add them to a given view using Dev Studio. You can add as many z1D Char fields as you need.
