MidTier does not interact with the database, it interacts with the ARS Server.
As for ARS Server ... You would not connect to an Oracle database the exact same way you connect to a DB2 and you don't connect to MS SQL Server from a Sun Solaris SPARC system at all. Suffice it to say that the ARS Server uses a native method related to the platform/database connected to.
