Ok... I need some upgrade plan assistance. We need to retain our ITSM data, move from 7.6 to 8.1. Along the way we need to end up at a new patch release of SQL Server and a newer Server OS version from (Windows Server 2003 to 2008).
I've reviewed the upgrade documentation and the BMC Connect webinar regarding things to know for upgrading. However, I am struggling to come up with the order in which to accomplish all these things and be able to use the tools available such as the Delta Data Migration tool so we don't have to manually migrate data. I originally planned on: 1) Stand up a new parallel 8.1 ARS ITSM SQL Windows environment as a fresh install with all the versions of everything I want to end up with 2) Recreate our customizations as overlays in the new environment 3) Use the DDM tool to do the initial data migration of our production data from the 7.6 system to the new install. 4) Manually migrate custom data 5) Test 6) Use DDM to migrate the delta data and point everyone to the new environment for Production use. However, I have leaned the DDM will not work this way (to do the initial data migration). So I am back to the drawing board. >From what I have read, the recommended Staging approach to upgrade and use DDM >requires that you set up the staging server with a copy of the production >database and the same OS and SQL DB version as the current production system. >So how do we end up at the new version of Windows and SQL after running the >BMC application upgrades, converting customizations to overlays, and DDM'ing >data? Here is where we are: Current State: * Server OS's - Windows Server 2003 R2 * SQL Server - Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) * ARS - 7.5.00 Patch 008 * ITSM - 7.6.00 Patch 001 Desired State: * Server OS's - Windows Server 2008 R2 * SQL Server - Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP3) * ARS - 8.1.00 Patch 002 * ITSM - 8.1.00 Patch 002 Is what I am trying to do impossible, or did I miss something obvious? Could I get away with setting up the upgrade staging server and db copy on the newer OS and SQL Server? Thank you so much for you time.
