Think of Asset management as the end user view into CMDB. Asset management as a process also involves putting financial, contractual, and/or license/warranty info associated to a CI. There's also a common saying which is: "All Assets are CI's but all CI's are not assets." The thinking there is that your CMDB might have CI's in there that are logical such as business processes, services, that don't really have a dollar value and are not tracked as Assets. So, they still need to exist and be recorded in the CMDB but not tracked and managed by your Asset Management process.
