Dear all,

We are writing to let you know of a new webserver http://www.webact.org  that has been developed for the generation, and online display of ACT comparison files .

We have made available pre-computed up to date comparisons of publicly available annotated microbial genomes.
The results of the pre-computed blast comparisons are stored in a relational database along with the full embl format records for each of the genome sequences.
Storing the data thus allows the records to be retrieved in a number of ways,  including specifying a gene of interest in one genome for display of the corresponding regions of similarity (if present) in another genome.  Comparisons are then presented for display through an applet version of ACT or are available compressed for download.

Furthermore, WebACT allows users to cut and paste sequences (raw or annotated), upload their own sequence files (raw or annotated) or query public databases based on accession numbers / EMBL IDs.    Comparisons are generated (BlastN or TBlastX - options can be changed) and presented for viewing online through the applet version of ACT.

All  genome comparisons, generated comparisons and sequences are made available compressed for downloading and viewing using the standalone version of ACT.

WebACT is fully documentated and we are releasing the facility to the ACT mailing list in BETA version,  the final version will include a wider number of genomes (including viruses and archaebacteria) and is being based on EBI's Genome Reviews

The WebACT applet requires that JAVA2 be installed on the users machine, details of which can be found on the Software Requirements page.

We would very much appreciate any feedback, comments and suggestions you may have.

best regards

David Aanensen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and James Abbott ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
