Yes Artifactory needs a database to run. The one provided by default is Java
DB also known as Derby DB. With this, no database installation or DB
connection configuration are needed.
If you need a permanent view of your artifacts, you can activate incremental
backup that will provide a clear view of your repositories.
Accessing directly Artifactory database is not very useful, but if you are
using MySQL or any other connected databases, you can manage dump/restore
outside Artifactory process (don't forget the files in artifactory/data).
For managing files directly, you should use Artifactory REST API or WebDAV
interface.
