Quite a few ways:

   - Connect to the process via jconsole\jvisualvm (they have controls for
   thread dumps).
   - Executing a "kill -3 <pid>" command in a Unix environment.
   - Fire a command in a running Java console (Ctrl-Break for Windows,
   Ctrl-\ for Mac).
