This doesn't sound right.
Maven is supposed to assemble requests for release-version artifacts based
on the dependency declarations in your POM, not the repository it's meant to
resolve from; that is, upon encountering a <type> Maven should make the
association with the respective classifier and treat it as such, so although
both artifacts appear to have the same GAVC, the test jar is supposed to be
requested with the "test" classifier.
What versions of Artifactory and Maven are you using?
Can you attach an example project that reproduces this behavior?
