You were exactly right. There was a defunct remote repository, and marking it as offline solved the problem. >From what I've heard on the Gradle mailing list, quite a few people might be affected by this problem. Does it count as "Failed retrieval (cache period)"? Maybe an exponential backoff would work better? Thanks!
