This may be more than you really want to try and do, but try using the OSS 
drivers in the new kernel - the one in 2.4 was pretty primitive, but the one 
in 2.4.1 is quite a bit more refined.  The onboard sound is still not 
of the best quality (it really pops each time aRTS grabs it), but other than 
that it works like a charm.
