I'd really like to have a mixer gui for mixing sounds back in aRts, similar
to the ones you will find on older screen shots of aRts, see

(upper left corner is a mixer widget). What is still a bit incomplete after
the aRts -> MCOP/KDE2 switch is the modular GUI support. I plan to put some
work into it in the next time.
On the other hand, if you want a "quick" solution you might consider writing
a small standalone application or extension to artscontrol. I guess, if you
know C++, it wouldn't be too much work, to get something like on the
screenshot running. The synthesis modules and widgets you need (like the poti,
the equalizer synth module, ...) are already there, so it's just a matter of
plugging them together.
Finally: there is KJukeBox, which should run on aRts, and is supposed to be
a DJ-style application. It doesn't even need XMMS, but uses aRts for playing
mp3s. I don't know it's current state, though.
