Probably because artsd tries to open the device as stereo, but your
soundcard only supports mono? In that case, there is no help but changing
the aRts source, right now doesn't support mono at all (not even in KDE2.1,
I am afraid). It's somewhere on the TODO list, but the TODO list is long, ...
