Are you using xmms or mpg123 with output over artsd, like
artsdsp xmms # or alternatively the aRts XMMS output plugin?
artsdsp mpg123
Normally, it should not suspend while doing something (and playing audio from
xmms should count as doing something). You might also try to kill artsd away
and start it manually with
artsd -l0 -F10 -S4096
to see if it just suspends (which it shouldn't do) while xmms is running, or
does something else, like crash.
