Swimmers rescued by city firefighters

ASBURY PARK: Two city firefighters came to the rescue of two Asbury Park men who were swimming at Fifth Avenue beach late Sunday afternoon, a fire official said.

The swimmers, Abraham Vasquez, 23, and Jose Carlos Aguillar, 26, were rescued by firefighters Clemente Capalongo and Robert Fahnholz, who swam into rough surf to come to the swimmers' aid, said Garrett M. Giberson, spokesman for the Asbury Park Fire Department. The Coast Guard also responded to the call for a water rescue, which came in at 5:44 p.m. Vasquez and Aguillar appeared to be "shaken up" after the rescue, but were otherwise unharmed. Giberson said the rescue was difficult because of riptides.
