Let me explain. When I said tranquil, I was referring to our area, post-Labor Day. In the Spring through Summer, you expect a busy time. I should have worded this, a little better. Sorry about that. Whenever I had time off from my employment, I would dedicate a day, to just meandering the beach, searching for shells, sea glass or just looking out to sea. You have to understand, that I didn't have the benefit of family, as I moved 1800 miles from home and I took vacation time, whenever one of my kids was ill. During one of my little ones illnesses, (there were 5, you know), when they felt better, I would suggest a ride down to the beach, in the off season and the results were remarkable. My 4th child, was recovering from influenza and she was about 8 or 9. It was the 5th day and she was really able to go back to school, but instead, I thought to really rid her of this illness, we'd take a ride down to the beach, for the air. I was living in Neptune, in the section called, "Hamilton", by natives, because we lived near the Hamilton Fire House in, "By The Sea Hills", according to the map in Neptune. It was always a treat for the kids, to visit Asbury Park. I had always lived near water and couldn't imagine, living in a "land-locked", area. I considered Neptune that way, in a sense, because the nearest body of water was the Shark River. In the "off" season, it was common for year-round residents, to walk, jog, go and watch storms, etc., because, that's what WE do! Before moving to Neptune, I lived in So. Belmar, now Lake Como and my kids walked, to the beach. I had no idea that the 16th Ave. Beach, was where people of color, was allowed. Someone spoke of the Greek Fest and that was the location, until 1984, when there was an incident, that I told my then, 2 college sons, never to ask me for money to go there, again! There was an incident where the Swat Teams, from Wall, NJ, came with sniffing dogs, harrassment and embarrassment for friends, who were just trying to have a day at the beach! I haven't been back since! Was just trying to make a point, as to why I chose to move here, from Neptune. That's all.
