this is a public mailing list, of course, so you can post here or you can mail me privately. I try to put general answers of likely benefit to all proposers on the wiki (expanding the text linked from the main student projects page).
I'm generally unavailable for chat, as it tends to interfere too much with my real job. If/when a project is approved by google, email and skype (or google chat) will be used. I would encourage everyone to submit your idea(s) now through the google mechanism, and possibly for other topics related to ascend as well. I will be trying to provide some feedback via the google mechanisms on all the ideas for which I am a likely mentor (probably parallelism and differentiation, based on the applications so far) before the deadline so that individuals can update their proposals. there is also an ascend gsoc general announcements/discussion list for applicants https://lists.andrew.cmu.edu/ mailman/listinfo/ ascendinterest-gsoc2009 to which you should subscribe. The adminstrator and mentors will post general interest information there. Ben Allan
