Hi Girish

Thanks for your enquiry. Our list of possible student projects with
ASCEND is given here:
http://ascend4.org/Student_projects

We haven't yet updated this list for 2013, but many of the topics are
still available, and at the least you get a good idea of the range of
possible areas and levels of difficulty etc.

In my experience, projects in ASCEND fall into two broad categories, (1)
the 'hardcore' ones that involve work on the compiler and/or solver
engines, and require a solid mathematical as well as software
background, and (2) the interface and usability ones, that can still be
complex and difficult, but tend to be more difficult on the software
side and have a lower requirement in mathematical programming. Our
interface and GUI code is mostly in Python/PyGTK (with a thin C++
'wrapper' layer that we would like to remove at some point), while our
solvers and compiler are written in C.

I would encourage you first of all to jump in build (compile/install)
and *use* ASCEND for a little while, so that you are clear about what it
currently achieves. Give us some thoughts on areas that you think it
should be improved. From there, we can perhaps discuss a topic suitable
for you and your interests.

Cheers
JP
