Delimited blocks are delimited by a line of repeated characters.
Only a few characters make sense visually so as the number of block
types grew the delimiters were recycled using the styling mechanism.
But it's not very consistent (which block style belongs to which
delimiter?).
Another related inconsistency is that only some (but not all)
delimited block styles can be applied to a single paragraph.
I've committed a patch
(https://code.google.com/p/asciidoc/source/detail?r=5c3e60bffde9b9e9ef71eac0a34b39c9f861c871)
which:
1. Allows all delimited block styles to be applied to the 'open block'
(abstract, partintro, example, sidebar, verse, quote, literal,
listing, NOTE, TIP, IMPORTANT, CAUTION, WARNING, source, comment,
music, latex, graphviz).
2. Generalizes paragraph styling so that all single-paragraph blocks
can be expressed as a styled paragraph.
(abstract, partintro, example, sidebar, verse, quote, literal,
listing, NOTE, TIP, IMPORTANT, CAUTION, WARNING, source, comment,
music, latex, graphviz).
The consequences are:
1. A greater consistency.
2. An alternative minimalist syntax which reduces the amount of
typing, provides for additional block nesting, and is probably
easier to learn (one paragraph syntax and one delimited block
syntax), but is arguably harder to read.
Limitations:
1. Because the same block syntax can't be nested, using only the 'open
block' is more limiting than the existing syntaxes, but it does
provide an additional level of nesting when used with the existing
syntaxes.
2. The Vim edit section body highlighting for the open block is not
appropriate for some styles.
Examples:
This:
[sidebar]
Lorum ipsum...
is equivalent to:
**************
Lorum ipsum...
**************
This:
[NOTE]
--
Lorum ipsum...
Lorum ipsum...
--
is equivalent to:
[NOTE]
======
Lorum ipsum...
Lorum ipsum...
