I am running asciidoc 8.6.6-2 on Arch linux ( Lenovo laptop 16GB RAM i7 core

However, when I use the command a2x against a very simple document (3 pages) it
takes more than 50 seconds to execute.

Is it normal or can I do something to speed up things?

The 96 page User Guide takes 30s on my similarly speced machine:

$ time a2x doc/asciidoc.txt

real    0m30.464s
user    0m26.214s
sys     0m1.592s

asciidoc really slows if you are rendering a lot of table cells with the 'asciidoc' style (because each cell will spawn a new copy of asciidoc).

Post an example and I'll run it on my machine.

Cheers, Stuart
