I agree with Lex's assessment -- .asciidoc is verbose but I think if we have to choose a file name extension it's the best choice. I dropped vim/ftdetect/asciidoc_filetype.vim from the trunk shortly after 8.6.8 -- the file detection was ambiguous and the default settings satisfied no one. My reason for commenting now on this thread is because the asciidoc.vim syntax file is going into the official Vim distribution along with this line in the official $VIMRUNTIME/filetype.vim (thanks Dan for getting that underway).
