Also, how about not forcing you to use a list for your callout references
in main body text?  Spent at least an hour fighting with them today.
mumble grumble...  Why not just spot any occurence of <1> and turn it into
a little symbol, whether it's in a code listing, body text, or indeed
anywhere?

I'm guessing this could be achieved using macros?  But that's voodoo
territory...
