I cannot coerce AsciiDoc to generate an acknowledgements section -- perhaps
because it is only supported in DocBook 5.x.* I am wondering what others do*.
The answer
here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/asciidoc/acknowledgements/asciidoc/fPIi1qkHiSQ/RGUE6eFuz1sJ
did not provide me with enough information. This toolchain is mostly new to
me, so I need some hand holding.
Here are the solutions I have tried.
*Defining acknowledgements as a preface*
This is the only version that created valid DocBook output. This means I
generated two prefaces, with the first having the id _preface. The only
drawback with this that I see is that, like the dedication and existing
preface, this does not appear in the out of the box generated PDF (perhaps
I am doing something wrong there).

Acknowledgements

First, the obligatory but oh so true statement. This work is wholly my
responsibility. Any errors contained herein are mine alone.
Few, if any projects, are ever developed in a vacuum. They depend upon the
thought and wisdom of those who have gone before, providing the seeds of
further ideas. For all that have gone before, I am deeply indebted. Some
people deserve special acclamation for the help they provided -- whether
directly or indirectly. I feel like an Oscar winner who recognizes the need
to thank everyone and will undoubtedly forget someone deserving of
attention. For those I have missed, I apologize. I wish to make clear, too,
that this work is wholly my responsibility. Any errors contained herein are
mine alone.
I'd like to thank the following individuals, without whose contributions,
this work would unintelligible: my friends.

*Creating a chapter*
A chapter was created within the preface -- this trailed the [preface] not
to be confused with preface above. Chapter is not valid within a preface --
nor do I want it there. Acknowledgements feels to me like it should be at
the same level as preface and dedication.

*Creating a section*
The code below generates a section. The generated simpara is not valid. It
is an unexpected element.
