There are a couple of problems with your source: 1. for the first footnote, to generate a footnote with an id you use footnoteref not footnote 2. the second footnote attribute list ends at the first ] (after the f1), so the inner footnoteref is not a complete macro, so its unrecognised 3. if the ] after the f1 is escaped, the second footnote attribute list then goes to the right place, but now the ] after f1 is escaped, so it isn't part of a macro, so the nested footnoteref is again not recognised. Not sure how this conundrum can be solved.
