Well thats more useful information :). What is happening is that the <space>--<space> is translated to <thin space><em dash><thin space> and as these are not counted as whitespace to delineate the link macro they get included in it. You should just need to backslash escape the -- so its not translated. But tex still shouldn't cark on it I don't think.
