Actually, there is. You just need to use the pass macro: :ccb: pass:quotes[_chocolate chip_ brownies] The attribute cannot be defined in the document header (under the document title) since AsciiDoc hasn't bootstrapped all the configuration by then. Just put in after a blank line. (Asciidoctor doesn't have this limitation). What you are doing here is rearranging the order of subsitutions. Otherwise, they happen in the order that leaves unprocessed text behind.
