Lex, your statement got me looking further. I've come to learn that the "asciidoc.py" on my path is a wrapper python script that does exactly what you said....it checks for files that changed and only builds (ie: calls the REAL asciidoc.py) script.
This is a custom install of asciidoc that my workgroup made, and I wasn't aware of it before.
