Incidentally, when I build using this command:
asciidoctor -d book book.txt
Links -- xrefs across source files and xrefs within the same file -- in the
resulting book.html work fine.
Ditto for the PDF version:
asciidoctor-pdf -d book book.txt
Just a problem with the epub version.
