[Rich] tipped us off about the Half-Byte Loader which lets you run homebrew
on late-model Sony PlayStation Portables. Above you can see a PSP Go
running Doom (a screenshot from the video after the break), which is a
prerequisite for any cracked device. HBL uses an exploit in the game demo
of Patapon 2, which is free for download. A crafted game save loaded onto a
Memory Stick gets you to the loader when selected from the continue menu of
the game. Right now this method works on all know firmware version 5.0 and
higher. Who knows when Sony will take action to kill an exploit like this
one.

Okay, I installed it. Now what? All the homebrew stuff I find is crap and
emulators and roms are wonky at best with none of them older than 2009
(that I found) I couldnt even *find* an nes game or genesis or gba that I
even wanted to keep.

Sony's never-ending battle to control the content that runs on its hardware
has moved to a new front on the Vita, with the company taking down
downloadable versions of two PSP titles in response to reports that they
include programming holes that allow the Vita to run unsigned, homebrew
code.

On March 1, the hackers at Wololo.net first publicly announced that their
homebrew Vita Half Byte Loader (VHBL) worked by exploiting a vulnerability
in a downloadable copy of the PSP title *Motorstorm: Arctic Edge*,
releasing a video of *Doom* being loaded onto the system by way of proof.
Sony responded quickly, removing *Motorstorm* from the PlayStation Store
just before VHBL was officially released the next day.

Users that had previously downloaded *Motorstorm* could still use the
exploit, though, and the hackers claim they went to great pains to ensure
that a few thousand people in and around the hacking community were able to
download the game before the details of the hack were made public. Previous
purchasers are no longer able to redownload the game from the PlayStation
Store, however, potentially leaving some innocent bystanders without access
to legally purchased titles if they delete their existing copy (Sony did
not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter).

Fast forward to Sunday, when the Wololo hackers teased that they had found
another exploit in Japanese and European PlayStation Store download
*Everybody's
Tennis* that could, in the hackers' tongue-in-cheek words, be "extremely
dangerous for [Sony's] business," by letting people play titles "such as 20
year-old 8-bit games and 154 different versions of *Pong*." Following form,
Sony once again removed the game from the PSN store just before the hackers
publicly released the new exploit yesterday.

Wololo claims its VHBL hack is useful only for running homebrew software
and not for playing pirated PSP or Vita games. Still, Sony has taken a
zero-tolerance approach to players running unauthorized code on its systems
in the past, usually responding to breaches by releasing re-secured
firmware updates, which hackers subsequently re-hacked.

Now, Sony instead seems to be using its control of PSP game downloads on
the Vita to try to cut off the supply of exploitable games as quickly as
possible, opening up a new front in the war for control of the Vita
hardware. They might have an uphill battle on their hands, though, as
Wololo's hackers claimed to "collectively have access to about 5 to 10 user
mode game exploits in psp games" earlier this month, and have created a
so-called "exploit factory" to easily port VHBL as new exploits are found.
We could be entering a new era in the Sony hacking wars, where exploits are
first released quietly before being publicly deployed as tactical weapons
that whittle down the number of downloadable PSP titles available from the
PlayStation Store.

*Doom PSP* is a fan port of the Doom source code which runs on the
Playstation Portable. The port was started by Lantus, but contains
additional code from many contributors. There are many diffirent versions
of doom psp, but the most popular ones are: v0.05, v1.4 and v2.01.

To get started, here are a couple guides on how to get started with
installing homebrews on your PSP. Guide 1 / Guide 2. Additional firmware
tools like Infinity 2.0 can come in handy too. However, we highly suggest
you do your research and be careful when modding your PSP to play homebrews.

Due to legal reasons, the game doesn't come with card images out of the
box, but you can add them in yourself. Unfortunately, you may have to
download card images one set at a time (slightly over a hundred files in
total) and manually place them in the corresponding folders, since combined
downloads may be hard to find, usually either leading to a dead link or in
sone cases a malware infested site. Images also cause the in-game shop to
lag horribly as you start you unlock more sets, but thankfully you can
toggle images on/off from the options menu.

Speaking of *homebrew apps for PSP*, there are a lot of options available
to make a choice. But before downloading the app, make sure you have a
suitable firmware installed to let the homebrew app run smoothly. Here are
a few of the best homebrew apps for PSP:

Shadow Warrior is one of the most popular 1st person shooter games of the
90's era. However, a reboot happened in 2013, followed by two sequels,
Shadow warrior 2 and 3 (announced). The reboot version homebrew app is
available to enjoy the game on PSP devices. The third sequel is set for a
2021 release.

Doom Legacy has been ported for the PSP Portable. The best part is that the
ported version comes with a multiplayer capability option. The homebrew PSP
Doom legacy promises the best version of old Doom games along with the
latest options. But that said, you also need to understand that the users
will be able to witness only the NEW VISUAL LIGHT on the software rendering
mode. The PSP homebrew version doesn't include in-game music although it
supports the multiplayer option. Do note that the PC-PSP port has been
designed to accommodate a total of 5 separate WAD files with one slot being
reserved for the primary WAD file. The other slots are used for
custom-created WAD files. A word of advice: try to keep minimal load
configuration to prevent hiccups while executing the PSP Homebrew Doom
Legacy.

This is it with a modded doom campaign certainly will encourage the gaming
addicts to have a go at the options available. The PSP version will have
modified campaigns for the Doom game series and promises lots of fun and
excitement. It is perfectly apt for PSP units. However, do focus on the
installation procedures carefully.

The version Hexen 1.1 has been uploaded for homebrew PSP. Well, there can
be some problems to face unless you install the actual version of the game
on the PC. Once installed, the homebrew version will run smoothly. Although
the port is based on the PSP Quake port, there is something problematic
with it. The actual source code being used for the game is taken straight
from the classic FPS by Raven Software. The Hexen II version comes with
some sort of changes for the PSP homebrew. Though errors have been fixed,
there can be some rendering problems at times. Some new features make the
PSP version more user-friendly. You will find support for resuming and
suspending games, music playback, optimized sky drawing, and lot more.

Categories Lite is the plugin used for creating customized folders by the
users to place their content on the PSP. It allows the user to categorize
the homebrew and isos into specific menu items, separated from one another.
This is one of the most utility based plugins that allows the users to stay
organized in regards to the content and store all the necessary homebrew
and games accordingly. Since the entire approach allows for an organized
effort, it results in easy sorting of games and content when in need. It is
easy enough to add the plugin. First, you need to create the folder in
directory /seplugins/ named categorieslite. Then, include the add
category_lite.prx to /seplugins/categorieslite/ folder.
Next, open the VSH.txt file and include a new line to add the plugin. If
you are using multiple plugins, it is better to add the code for this
plugin at the first line.
The code if you are using PSP 1000, 2000, 3000:
ms0:/seplugins/categorieslite/category_lite.prx 1
The code if you are using PSP Go:
ef0:/seplugins/categorieslite/category_lite.prx 1

So, here you have witnessed some of the best homebrew apps for PSP. While
there are lots of other options available, these above mentioned ones seem
to me quite useful. However, if you have some other options in mind, do
mention it in the below comment box.
