Dear Bill
I have been searching for information on one of my ancestral lines for over
2 decades.

I am looking for information on the father and mother of Stephen [Etienne]
McLean who was born around 1769 (location unknown, I cannot find a birth
record).

Stephen/Etienne married Magdalene Meurs (daughter of Francois Meurs) on 06
May 1794 St-Joseph Pointe-de-Lévy, St-Joseph, Lévis, Quebec, Canada. They
had one son, Etienne Francois McLean in 1796.

The marriage record includes this information for Stephen/Etienne:

*Résidence : Ville de QuebecOrigine : KatarakoniFils de Jean Makline et
Marie Lee.*

I can't find a marriage record for John/Jean McLean and Marie Lee, apart
from one tenuous record in Dutch Reformed Church in New York for Johann
M'Clean and Maria Lee in 1766.

I can find one reference to a Stephen McLean of Kingston, Ontario as a
'discharged artificer' for the Loyalists in the War of Independence but no
further familial information.

I believe Stephen was christened 'Stephen' rather than 'Etienne' because in
legal documents I found in the BanQ archives (he apparently abandoned his
wife, Magdalene not long after their marriage), he is referred to
repeatedly as 'Stephen' despite the document being in French.

I've always wondered if John/Jean McLean ever set foot in Canada, if he
could have been in fact American, or a soldier brought to America, from
Scotland/Ireland/England. I would very much appreciate information you
might be able to provide. Thank you in advance for your help.

Many thanks
Mandy
