Thanks for that Bob, I guess that's an option - I was hoping for
something a little cleaner really. I need to read more than I need to
write, and it needs to be as quick as possible as it's going to be part
of a debug / trace function which will get called a lot.

You could try shelling out and executing a 'set' command.
