Windows XP Home Edition

In a nutshell, this is the replacement for all of Microsoft's Windows 9x
and Windows Me product lines. It finally moves all home users to an NT
kernel OS. New computers shipping from several OEMs, including Compaq,
Dell, Gateway and most "mom & pop shops" will soon be shipping with this
version of the OS. As this is really not a discussion on why you should
move from Windows 9x to Windows XP (I think we all know why already), I
won't go into a complete review of the details of the new features of
the OS. Let's just think of Home Edition as the next major consumer OS.
All the basic features of the entire Windows 9x line have been rolled
into Home Edition. In addition, Home Edition has more sufficient
Internet Security options (Internet Connection Firewall), and more
robust multi-user support, which will prove quite handy for homes with
more than one user.

Windows XP Professional

Professional is the replacement for Windows NT Workstation and Windows
2000 Professional. It is aimed more towards the corporate market and
workstation market. This will be the primary OS for a lot of the
computer gurus out there currently running multi-processor systems, and
wanting a bit more than Home Edition can offer. As we'll soon see,
Professional adds a number of "power user" and "corporate friendly"
features to the XP package. Expect Professional to make massive inroads
in most of the corporate communities rather quickly. Most of the
companies I have been dealing with are quickly making a business case to
migrate to Windows XP on desktops and laptops, bypassing Windows 2000
totally.
