It is a question of cookies. When a user first visits your site, the web application returns a cookie with the session ID to the browser. The browser sends back the cookie with every subsequent request to the application. The application uses this ID to associate the request with a session. If the user closes the browser, the browser loses the session cookie. The next time the user visits the site, the application generates a new session and new session ID and sends it back in the cookie, starting the process over again.
The web application doesn't really know the user closed the browser, the browser has just lost the information needed to access the session.
