Good points, if your aim is to save time. My aim, however, is to learn
ASP.NET and to become as familiar as possible with its guts. Why should I
spend time learning some 3rd party's API when I can spend the time learning
how it all really happens? Doesn't the latter make me a more learned
programmer in the end?

While I would probably conceded that MasterPages are generally better than
using UserControls, for some reason I am always very hesitant to rely on 3rd
party assemblies. 

Granted I am sure some of the most flexible ASP.NET apps out there rely in
some form or another on 3rd party assemblies, but I would still feel a LOT
better coming up with my own implementation. 

Can somebody assure me that I can one day overcome my fear and learn how to
pluck assemblies/controls like apples from a tree?

master pages are much better than UserControls in that capacity.
