The easiest way to retrieve XML in ASP.net is use the XML Text reader.

The books "Beginning .net XML in C#" or "Beginning .net XML in VB.net"
 by Wrox are the best books to learn from. Buy them from Amazon used
(they may be out of print). You won't regret it.

are some of the best General XML books if w3schools does not go far
enough for you.
