Have you looked online? When you say browser based... does this mean flash, activex, and applets are out or in? Like I said if I was to tackle this I would use a messaging back end such as MQ or microsoft, then have those message trigger the "refresh" process. I am new to AJAX but that seems like a way, or the better way would be using a semi-thick client such as a flash swf that receives xml feeds or an applet. Applet security is hard to deal with though...
