All the research I have done on this stated that PHP is faster then Java, ASP, ASP.Net and PERL. I am not a PHP coder, however I do have a good deal of experience in art of researching having done an MBA and an MS. I was not impressed with the qualitative nature of all the benchmark tests. It reminded me of the Pet Store example that Sun and Microsoft battled over. When it was all said and done, as Dean states the Hardware architecture was the thing that made the difference... and of course.... how well it was coded. I can write PERL or C++ that takes over a minute to render or I can optimize it to run much much quicker... You get the point though. I would do some benchmark tests in a controlled environment meaning the same server. Write a data access test since that is what most web stuff is. Go after 10000 records with both and output the milliseconds when you start and when you end. Make sure you optimize both so it is good code on both sides. I have a feeling they will be just about the same.

They both ultimately render html to the browser. How the site shows up in directories is more a function of its nature and layout. Would say I have no knowledge of speed differences, but again I would think other factors (server hardware, load, site content), not too mention how well the code is written, would have more effect than the underlying programming language. Sounds like some boiler plate "free" analysis. There are a number of entries that can be googled on PHP vs ASP that state similar beliefs seem to date from the early part of this century.
