Hi Dean,

I've manage a CrystalTech Windows 2003 dedicated server. I don't have a
'Mail Server' role configured. I don't have any trouble having .NET apps
use SmarterMail.

My understanding is that if you don't to specify SmtpMail.StmpServer, .NET
will try to use the "Windows 2000" SMTP service.

My first solution would be to add this to my code:
myMessage.Fields.Add("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusing";,

"2")

If you don't specify the above, It will default to 1 if the SMTP service is
installed. That would explain why it only works when the default mail server
is running. Just a guess.

Steve
