You can't use the IDE with a service.

This is where old-fashioned debugging comes in handy.  Write out
errors or app state to a log file or the event log.

Log4Net is very handy in this case.

I also find it helpful to write the functional parts of a complicated
service in their own assembly and test them from a console or windows
app.  Which allows me to use the IDE to debug. The service app itself
is limited to the service-specific functionality.
