You can use an iframe for your content, or you can use any number of remote callback methods (like ajax) to load parts of the page.
Ajax is just a term for the combination of the XMLHTTP object and a page that provides data. There is a free library available at http://ajax.schwarz-interactive.de/csharpsample/default.aspx or for VB, http://ajax.schwarz-interactive.de/vbnetsample/default.aspx I've never used these, but I've heard several people recommend them.
