It was a surprise to me that till now daughters did not have equal rights to inheritance. I know it is a custom for daughters not to ask for inheritance but I had no idea that the law was against it too. Or was the situation gray and now the legislators are making it black and white so that women in India get legal rights to ask for property when their men siblings deprive them?

Hindu women get equal rights to inheritance
NEW DELHI, Aug 29 – Parliament today passed a Bill giving Hindu women equal rights in inheritance of property, with Lok Sabha approving the legislation by a voice vote, reports PTI. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Bill, 2005 was passed by Rajya Sabha on August 16. Winding up a brief discussion on the landmark Bill, Law and Justice Minister HR Bhardwaj said it would remove gender bias by giving equal rights to daughters as sons have.

He said since rights over agricultural land were part of the State subject, the Centre would soon write to state governments in its endeavour to bring a consensus on the matter.

Lauding the unanimous support extended by members cutting across party lines, the Minister said the Bill would give due place to women in the society and family.

He also said efforts were on to evolve a consensus on the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The Lok Sabha also passed after brief discussions, the Displaced Persons Claims and Other Laws Repeal Bill, 2005 and the Immigration (Carriers’ Liability) Amendment Bill, 2005 by voice vote. Both these Bills have already been passed by Rajya Sabha.
