FYI - I got a GPA of about 3.5 overall at Harvard -- in second semester - it was about 3.8 and --3.2 in the first semester.  At Delhi Univ I barely scraped through with a second division marks in Eco. Hons. Bachelors (about 50% or 2.4 GPA)- after having been the student at college with highest grades in high school - mainly becos school exams had short answers, was in science and math - and very practical.

Later I had done much better during my MBA at Hindu Inst. of Management among the top 10% of my class - due to marks for class particiaption and shorter semesters, two or three written exams for each course  and emphasis on practical aplications. Although all the professors were from Delhi Univ. they were esp. committed since it was a religious effort. I learnt about Bus. strategy from a Stanford Bus. Grad who later became the director. Who says studies cannot improve in India - if teaching pattern is changed.

Infosys Chief Narayan Murthy famously once said about his son: " he couldn't get into the IITs so he joined Cornell." Further, an Indian at Harvard is an international student - adds to diversity as well. Ofcourse, entrance exams of IIMs and IITs are the toughest in the world and have a format quite different from GRE, SAT or GMAT and do not have the students write essays about their lives.

However, there is increasing criticism of deciding a person's caliber only the basis of written entrance exams - but given the subjectivity involved in judging otherwise - in Indian context it would be wise to continue to follow the current format.

I must say that I did much better at Harvard than I did at Delhi Univ. --got A and A- in some papers at Harvard-- mostly becos of the pattern of teaching and evaluation. Delhi Univ had an annual exam only to decide your performance - mostly involved vomitting out what one learnt-or scraped from the notes of seniors or more dliligent students. Memory power was more important than content knowledge. No marks were for class performance or mastery of applications of the knowledge gained. At Harvard - the professor can give you a higher grade if you made progess over the course of the semester - in class performance and the four-five written papers.

At Harvard Bus. School - i recall discussing with my Education professors - uses a case study method - 50% of the grade is for participation in classroom discussions -on various case studies. Everyone is expected to have prepared the case study. ANYONE can be asked to initiate the discussion. I'm not aware about the process at IIMs - perhaps Rajib-da can elaborate - having graduated from IIM-Ahmedabad.

And in turn, their standard, especially that of the IIM's, got so high that I heard of a few students who were rejected in one of the IIMs got admission in Harvard the same year. And did very well there too, of course.

Dear Mike,

IIMs and IITs were also based on "imported knowledge" - since they were set up by Uncle Nehru's blessings with active support of Western univs like Harvard MBA ( for setting IIM - Ahmedabad), London Bus. School, MIT etc.

However ALL knowledge is shared - not imported . West took knowledge of zero and numerals etc from Indians and paper making etc from Chinese. Now it is back and forth.

I wonder who invented the wheel.

Then there are the mushrooms from Manipal/Shimla/Rajasthan/Pune --- you

Every day you hear of greatness of IIT's/IIM's--how they "made us proud"

Everybody talks of Degrees

Nobody talks of Education--you can impart /import/seminate/disseminate ALL
knowledge
Do we need ALL for All? What have we done with ALL the imported knowledge?
