Hello all,
Iam new to this mailing list. But i find the mailings really intersting, hope I find them so always!!!

Well I am in no way concerned either with WaterWatch or with RiverWatch, and am also in no way focussed with Mumbai or New Orleans. But I feel, comparisions like the ones put forward by the "BE PROUD< WE ARE INDIANS" sender are nothing but a sense or self satisfaction arrived out of nothing. Well, honestly in the indian media (including the electronic, e.g rediff.com, indiatimes.com), you always see articles carrying the spirit of "BE PROUD, WE ARE INDIANS". But what I feel is, these articles only serve to give a wrong impression to the not so vivid reader, who strays away from the realities in India. This is this new found pride, I would think that is resulting in making the new bunch of IT migrants arrogant and unpolular co-workers. We feel we are supreme. We are Indians, we can do anything. Nothing wrong actually. But then I was just wondering how true is that. I stay in a very small city of Germany called Bocholt, which even the Germans are not aware of. Recently i went to India for a week. Normally I fly through Bangkok, and then to Guwahati or Calcutta. But for the first time I flew directly from dusseldorf to Delhi.
My sense of "BE PROUD" was in a flcker of a second lost soemwhere the moment I saw the Delhi airport. OK cig butts are normal for us. But can you imagine even cow dung in the exit. Well i was motivated to write this mail because of a small incident which happened yesterday. I took a break in the lunch time to pick one burger frm th Mc Donalds fr a change, yesterday with one of my coleagues, Martin. He is a German. We reached a cross road and were waiting for the lamp to turn green. Martin said, " O! nayyyy! would have crossed over, had this child been not here". Actually I immediately understood what he meant, but just to confirm myself I asked him what he meant. He said then, look Amlan I know it is wrong to run over a red light. But I can do it as I know I am safe now and i am in a hurry. But if this child sees that, he will never learn that he SHOULD NOT do it. When to do it he will learn hmself as he gorws up. Well now a comparision.

When I was in Delhi, one of most sober, educated and well settled "gal"friends from Axom took me out for a coffee. It was already too much for me to see cars, cycles, two wheelers never heeding the red light, "if possible". atleast be sure to see the whole of ZEBRA crossing being coverred by cars when stranded for the light to turn ORANGE. Even my friend did tha. I asked her. Why she has to stopovr the zebra crossing. Her reply was the obvious one anyone can expect!!!
Well I know such stories are nothig new for u guys as well. Many of you have been settleing outside India for much longer time than me. Many of you are much more focussed then me to OUR problems and are also acting on them. But I am still saying...Many of you have cnstructed nice houses back in India which are comparble to any apartment/house anwhere in the world. Yes many Indians have learned to keep their houses clean. BUt we shoudl also learn not to throw the garbase just outside our compund. We should enlarge the concept of "our compnd" to cover our entire city may be. I am not saying you are not doing that. But then teach 10 ther Indians to do that. You will feel proud of yourself then. India will feel proud of you. The world will feel proud of us. Like they are because we "had" YOGA.

Nothing wrong in feeling "WE ARE PROUD AS WE ARE INDIANS". But dont stop there. And dont compare un equal scales. Thats carries no meaning.

but well i really fee proud to see the number of deaths per hour comparision quoted by the writer. O ya! practice makes a man pefect. As we are used to calamaties & worst liiving conditins always, so we learned our ways of surving as well. Nothing more actually. Indian infradtructure has nothing to do with that. Just our personal skills.

Ok i must stop here....So may be we really can say, WE ARE PROUD BECAUSE WE HAVE MITTAL WHO IS OF INDIAN ORIGIN, WE HAVE KHOSLA, WHO IS OF INDIAN ORIGIN...... I dont know where will this count stop. But am sure not that long. lets all make this count longer by one more count by adding our names there.
ciao

Looks like someone got a heart-burn from my response to the New
Orleans vs. Mumbai comparison. So he/she went ahead and formed the
[WaterWatch] Yahoo Group and dispatched the following Digest 567.

Digest 567 is certainly a brilliant piece- for someone who must not
be too bright. In comparison, I am afraid to ask what 566 and the
earlier ones would be like.

BTW, it was not I who started 'riverswatch' and 'riverlinking' who
sends the digests out. So [WaterWatch] digests are unlikely to give
me indigestion :-).
