The Gauhati University Teachers Assn. wants the Center to give it the Central University Status. I wonder why though?

Could this be because,

The standards are falling? Or the GU is fiancially strapped because of corruption and/or State Govt. apathy? I am not sure what the benefits of becoming a Central Univ. are, but one of them sure is cash. The other one,  of course,  is if things go wrong, one can always lay the blame at the Center's feet.

The news report's title is also bit misleading: "Delhi apathy annoys teachers "

The matter hasn't even reached the PMO. The news only talks about the ineptness/unwillingness of Assam MPs to get an interview with the PM. Why is that Delhi's fault? Blame Assam's representations at Delhi.

Having spent a good portion of my life at GU, I would hate to see to become some 3rd rate institution from the high standing of excellence in administration, teaching & research GU once had.

Delhi apathy annoys teachers

Sept. 12: The Gauhati University Teachers Association has come down heavily on Congress legislators and ministers for failing to secure the association's appointment with the Prime Minister despite repeated requests. The association wants to voice its demand of granting central university status to Gauhati University before Manmohan Singh.

The association's president, Atwar Rahman, said it was unfortunate that in spite of having a Congress government at the Centre, party MPs and ministers from Assam could not secure an appointment with Manmohan Singh in six months.

"We first met chief minister Tarun Gogoi and he assured us that he would take a personal initiative on the matter. The association met MP Kirip Chaliha and requested him to correspond with the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) for an early appointment. Chaliha has disappointed us," Rahman said.

In May, a delegation of the teachers' association went to Delhi after Chaliha assured the association that he would fix an appointment with the Prime Minister. Fax messages seeking an appointment were sent to the PMO eight times. The office, however, did not reply to any of the messages.

Rahman said the teachers' association had also met the minister for handloom and handicrafts, Hemo Prova Saikia, requesting her to take up the matter with the Prime Minister directly.

"Teachers were under the impression that Saikia could have done the job since Manmohan Singh was elected as the Rajya Sabha MP for the first time by showing the residential address of Saikia. But Saikia too did not show much interest and wrote a very ordinary letter to the PMO after several requests," Rahman said.

The association has now approached AGP legislator Sarbananda Sonowal for an appointment with Manmohan Singh. Sonowal is now in England, as part of the Indian parliamentary team, to play cricket in London.

Rahman said the association would be forced to stage demonstrations in New Delhi if an appointment was not granted soon.

A general body meeting of the association in June 2004 had taken the resolution of demanding central university status for Gauhati University.

A meeting of the association's executive members on February 23 this year resolved to carry the matter forward.

Teachers said Gauhati Universty, established in 1948 under the Gauhati University Act, 1947 (Assam Act XVI of 1947), deserves central university status.
