NEW DELHI, Oct 15 – Bidding farewell to politics for ever, Dada Saheb Phalke Awardee, Dr Bhupen Hazarika today urged all sides to expedite the negotiation process to usher in an era of peace and prosperity though he conceded that there should be no dream of immediate solution to the problems. The former chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi was addressing a press conference here today on the eve of his performance at the Siri Fort auditorium here tomorrow organised by the Assam Association, Delhi in aid of construction of a socio-cultural centre – Srimanta Sankardeva Bhawan.

“I have left everything that has got any smell of politics behind. I am a very busy artiste and would like to remain one,” he asserted, when asked about his political career.

Dr Hazarika had joined the BJP ahead of the last Parliamentary polls and contested the Guwahati Lok Sabha seat and was defeated by Congress candidate Kirip Chaliha.

Expressing his reluctance to take questions relating to politics, Dr Hazarika, however, stressed that he was not an escapist and has been a fighter all his life.

About the ongoing peace process in Assam, he said that he claimed that he was among the first to talk about mediation of the problem between ULFA and government of India. Even ULFA also suggested that I get myself involved but I declined because I don’t believe in violence,” he asserted.

But he expressed his sadness at the unabated violence despite all talks of peace. If this is alochona (discussion) then we are still waiting for one,” he said. Please tell the government of India and the peace lovers that if they really want peace then they must start off. The government of India also must be quite clear about it, he said, replying to a question about the latest peace moves.

When asked if he supported the demand for sovereignty, he said that he wanted to be a very good Indian and then an Assamese Indian.

Asserting that his song Manuhe, Manuhor babbe…. still has relevance, he said that all his life he has been shouting for peace. He recalled his visit to Nagaland to understand the Naga underground movement.

Often breaking into songs to the delight of the media, the balladeer said that all his earlier composition was socially oriented and socially conscious people have always helped him.

The multi-lingual programme, titled “Legend’s nite – Brahmaputra to Mississippi” is expected to give people of Delhi a rare opportunity to traverse the great balladeer’s musical life. It is the legendary singer’s first solo performance in the capital in three years. The event has been organised by the Assam Association to raise funds to complete its project of establishing a cultural and educational centre in Delhi.

Started in 2000 at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.5 crores, the construction of the bhawan is almost complete. Once inaugurated, it is likely be the only centre outside Assam for the practice and promotion of the variegated culture of Assam and related academic activities. A part of the building is also designed to facilitate holding of various events and lodging of visitors, students, and patients from the region.
