Guwahati, Oct 30: Not too many years back, the whole of cracker market of Assam had to depend largely on Sivakashi factory in Tamil Nadu but of late, things has begun to change as the local market based at Nogaon and Barpeta district of the State have started to take the burden of huge demand in this part of the country.

In fact, if the traders of Nogaon and Howli are to be believed, then they are being able to wholesale more products than the hub of crackers, Sivakashi does.

"This year we have witnessed a record sale and to be honest our business is improving every year", said Babul Borah who runs a wholesale shop in Nogaon.

Interestingly in spite of the presence of wholesale market in Guwahati, traders small and big are thronging both Nogaon and Barpeta to bring in crackers, which would enable them to make a hefty profit out of it.

" I have been doing retail business of crackers in Guwahati for the last six years and has been able to earn 100 per cent profit out of it", informed Devraj Sarmah of the city’s Dispur area.

Though I am engaged with a shop of mine as a full time business, yet I could not resist myself because of the amount of profit involved in this", added Sarmah.

Interestingly, the crackers bought from Nogaon and Barpeta are less costlier in comparison to what is in Sivakashi and moreover, the distance and complexities in transportation is much less than Sivakashi.

"We are offering equally good products at much lesser cost that suits more to their business", added a dealer of crackers in Nogaon.

"For example, one dozen of Jugmug crakers that costs around rupees175 in Guwahati, can be purchased for 125 in Nogaon", cites the dealer.

When asked as to which form of crackers sells more, the respective dealer said that it is the chocolate crackers (jugmug), chilly crackers and the sparkles sticks that has the most demand.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati based wholesalers are hopeful about their business this Diwali though they are aware of the fact that the retailers are going to places like Nogaon and Barpeta.

"We are aiming at family market this season and as of now things are looking good", said Ramesh Maheswari, a cracker wholesaler in Guwahati
