Hi,

I have a final interview on Thurs - to face - for a unique position in a high school in Washington DC -managed by a private for-profit US-wide educational group. Their Vice Principal and Acad. Director  have agreed that I am "definitely" working with them - most likely to help improve the SAT scores for their studnets so that they can go to hi-fi colleges -and to counsel them not to drop out from college. Though a nearly All African-American school -both students and faculty - the school has a 97% graduation rate - now all they need is to go to good colleges and not wilt while there - an environment of predominantly white and richer students.

www.leda2003.org is one organization in New York which has been working in such field and I had been there to learn how they do it. Hopefully I will get the position (I must if I have to improve my bank balance from $130 only - with $200 more in Traveller Cheques from when I left India) and take up the challenging task.

Similar approach can work wonders in improving education of tribals, Dalits in India.

Indian Americans it seems are light years behind Indians - when it comes to school management and entrepreneurship and perhaps instruction. It is true that up to 25 years ago in India it was the Christian Missionary schools -which led the way. However, the private schools in India have cleaned up their act - and those such as Delhi Public Schools (a private group) are giving the Christian ones (having foreign funding and support) a run for their money. I saw this very clearly in Bhopal when the first branch of DPS was opened charging 3 times the tuition fee -compared to Christian ones -which had dominated the scene for decades till 1999.

Maybe, my experience (if I get the job) would help change the western perspective that Indian educators are sub-standard. Not long ago "Made in Japan" meant no more than trinkets and umbrellas (as per Sony's founder Akio Morita's Autobiography "Made in Japan" ). Maybe in future Indians from India can help Americans run their Charter Schools etc -- just the way Indians are running BPOs, consultancies and many American corporations.

Any views?

Umesh
